HFIP is an almost colorless liquid used as a solvent and synthetic intermediate. It has a strong, distinctive odor. It is a volatile, corrosive liquid that can cause severe burns and respiratory problems.

This fluorinated polar solvent of high ionizing power facilitates Friedel–Crafts-type reactions, using covalent reagents in the absence of a Lewis acid catalyst.
